From
that beginning the City now staffs and equips 3 fire stations 24 hours a
day, 7 days a week , 365 days a year, to respond to the needs of the
community. The department responds to approximately 100 calls per month and
has an average response time to your emergency in four minutes. The types of
calls that personnel are trained for and are prepared to respond to include;
fires, medical emergencies, auto crashes, hazardous materials incidents
including the recent issues of terrorism, smoke/odor investigations, fire
and carbon monoxide alarms, confined space rescue, and high angle rope
rescue. The department will even try to help anyone who has a problem and
doesn't know who else to call.
In
addition to emergency services the department also provides on going public
safety services that include fire safety inspection and prevention programs
for homes, businesses and in the schools, child safety seat inspections,
juvenile firesetters intervention, CPR courses to the community, and annual
testing of over 800 fire hydrants.
When
a firefighter is dressed properly to fight a fire he is wearing
approximately 50 pounds of protective gear that costs over $3000.
A
fire engine hauls 1000 gallons of water and is capable of pumping 1500
gallons per minute from hydrants. In addition it carries 1500 feet of
hose, firestream nozzles, several ladders, axes, shovels, pry bars, rope,
two way radio, generator, lights, fans, jaws of life, emergency medical
equipment and the replacement cost today would be about $270,000. To replace
a ladder truck and equipment about $400,000. The expected front line life of
each truck in Rock Springs is 15 years with another 5 to 10 years as a
backup/reserve.
The
Rock Springs Fire Department is staffed by 35 highly trained people that are
proud to serve this community and are dedicated to the safety of all who
live, work and travel through here.
