OVERVIEW of CITY GOVERNMENT

Rock Springs is a First-Class Wyoming city with a Mayor-Council form of government.  The Mayor is elected by a city-wide ballot every 4 years.  The council is divided into 4 wards with 2 council seats per ward.  The council seats are staggered and one seat in each ward is up for election every two years.

The Mayor appoints department heads with council approval.  The departments are created, and the department head salaries are set by statute.  The council meets regularly in public in the City Hall Council Chambers at 212 D Street.  Meetings are  held on the first and third Tuesday of every month beginning at 7:00 pm.

The agenda are available before the meetings and the minutes are published in the Rocket Miner and on this web page.  The public is invited to attend the meetings which are broadcast on local channel 13.  Anyone may speak during the Petition segment of the meetings.

The Mayor also appoints a number of board and commissions which act as oversight and advisory boards for a number of community activities and ongoing city functions.  These appointments too are subject to council approval.

The council establishes law in the form of city ordinances and policy is set by council resolution.
