The Rock Springs History
Museum was the original City Hall built in 1892.
The building remained the focus for civic life in Rock Springs for
almost 90 years till the new city hall building on D Street was opened in 1982.
The building was idle until the idea of a museum caught hold in the
mid- 1980's and a group of citizens formed a committee to put the
building back in service. Ray Lovato, the Community Development
Coordinator for the city at the time was instrumental in getting the
building rededicated to that purpose and obtaining the funds to
restore the building.
The Museum now housed there is the home of
thousands of items of personal and public property collected by the
citizens of Rock Springs.
One of those items is the Rock Springs
Coal sign that graced the city's major crossroads for more than 50
years announcing our town's special place in the pre-diesel railroad
world. In the 1960's the sign seemed an anachronism and was
taken down and put somewhere.
When the museum was opened again, someone said "Gee, I wish we had
that old sign." and a search was made.
The sign was recovered and restored and placed almost in
its original location in downtown Rock Springs just a block from the
Museum. The sign is flanked by the Depot park which contains
other remembrances of the town's coal mining past. The miner's
memorial is worth a few moments to check out.
