ARBOR DAY CELEBRATION!!

The City of Rock Springs celebrated Arbor Day on Monday, May 12, 2008, at 10:00 AM with tree plantings at the Civic Center, located at 410 “N” Street, Rock Springs. Mayor Kaumo, along with members of the Parks and Recreation Department and Lewis Tree Service planted six Baby Blue spruce trees along the bank of the Bitter Creek north of the Civic Center parking lot.

Representatives from the Wyoming State forestry Department recognized the City of Rock Springs with their fourteenth annual “Tree City, USA” award. The Arbor Day Foundation’s Tree City, USA program encourages, supports, and strengthens effective urban and community forestry programs in diverse communities nationwide through recognition, education, and publicity.

Tree City, USA is thriving in Wyoming because of the strong partnership between the Arbor Day Foundation and the Wyoming State Forestry Division and its dedicated communities. Wyoming boasts 39 certified Tree City, USA communities. The dedication of Wyoming’s urban and community foresters, city officials, and citizens to participate in and encourage planting and caring for trees in their cities and towns helps increase energy savings, cleans the air and water, and beautifies the entire state.

We urge the residents of our community to make plans to plant a tree this spring or summer to keep our city green!!!!

In conjunction with the expansion at White Mountain Golf Course, the City of Rock Springs has accepted contracts to begin construction of Arthur Park and its first off leash Dog Park.  The first phase completion of these two projects is scheduled for late fall of 2008 with openings set for the spring of 2009.  Arthur, roughly 9 acres, will include 9 holes of disc golf, a ½ mile walking track, plaza, playgrounds, and restroom facilities.  The Dog Park will include walking paths, undulating terrain play areas, shelter, pond and a dog wash location.

Bitter Creek Reconstruction

When early settlers encountered Bitter Creek they had little good to say about it as in a journal of  William Hepworth Dixon in 1867 pg. 118, "the creek... is utterly abominable to man and beast; rank poison, which inflames the bowels and corrupts the blood."

Today work is underway which could drastically change the way we view the creek.  Click here to view the final draft of the Bitter Creek Reconstruction Plan.
