How is the Optional 1% Sales and Use Tax generated?

 

The Optional 1% Sales and Use Tax is generated by sales of tangible personal property and other authorized transactions at a rate of 1% (in addition to the State Sales Tax of 4% and the county 1% Capital Facilities Tax for municipal improvements voted on last November). The Optional 1% Sales and Use Tax was first approved by the voters of Sweetwater County in 1973, and has been supported by the voters and stayed in place through the present time. The tax comes before the voters of Sweetwater County every four years.

 

How much revenue does it generate?

 

In fiscal year 2006, the Optional 1% Sales and Use Tax brought in $8,843,293 to the City of Rock Springs.

 

Who pays for it?

 

Anyone who purchases certain goods and services in Sweetwater County. This includes not only permanent residents, but also people visiting and doing business in Sweetwater County.

 

What does it pay for?

  • Park improvements and Civic Center Improvements

  • Cemetery Expansion

  • Fire and Police Equipment

  • Street Overlays and Seals

  • Senior Citizens Funding

  • “A Street” Viaduct project matching funds

  • Gateway Boulevard Extension matching funds

  • Funding for the Airport

What projects will it fund in the future?

 

  • Senior Citizens Facilities

  • Street Projects including the intersection of Broadway and F Street, and the M Street Underpass

  • Structural Improvements to the Civic Center

  • Arthur Park and Rahonce Park

  • Establish Reserves for future recreation projects such as the golf course

  • Matching funds for street, sidewalk, curb and gutter improvements
