When to Call the Police Department

Emergencies: In any emergency call 911. When calling 911 be sure to have your name, the address of the emergency, and what the emergency is about. It is also helpful to have a callback number in case the phone call is disconnected. When calling 911 remember to stay calm and give the dispatcher as much information as possible including helpful directions if needed. It is also helpful to have someone standing near the area assistance is needed to direct law enforcement and paramedics to the scene quicker.

Report a Crime: Whenever you have been a victim, witness, or have knowledge of a crime you should notify the police department. When calling the police department try to have as much information as possible:

  • Crime committed - type and location 
  • Description of the suspect - clothing description, race, height, age 
  • Description of suspect vehicle - license plate, color, make, direction of travel 
  • Contact information - your name and a phone number you can be reached at

Civil Standby: Whenever you need to retrieve items from a location or residence and you fear an argument might arise with someone you can request a civil standby. When available, members of our police department will standby while you retrieve your items and help ensure that no conflicts occur between either people.

House Watch: The Rock Springs Police Department can watch your home if it will be vacant for a length of time.

Animal Calls: All animal calls should be referred to Rock Springs Animal Control. They handle calls such as animal bites, barking dogs or loose animals. If you have an animal related incident after hours, leave a message and an animal control officer will return your call. If you have an animal related emergency such as an animal bite after hours please call the police department.
