The Rock Springs Police Civil Service Commission will be conducting monthly testing for interested applicants. Candidates must pass a physical fitness test by meeting one of the following requirements: 1) meet the 40th percentile in each category assessed, 2) accumulate a 50th percentile average of all categories assessed with a minimum level of 25th percentile in each category.  Candidates must then pass a written P.O.S.T. exam consisting of four (4) sections that measure the applicant's basic math and problem-solving, reading comprehension, grammar and writing. They must meet a minimum score of 70% in each section with an overall average of 75% to pass. Oral board interview, EyeDetect Integrity Test, and intensive background investigation also required. Certified Peace Officers are not required to take the written exam and could be considered lateral transfers.                                                                                                     

Step Plan Pay Scale for Patrol Officer Position - Add 1 step for each year of service:

  • Step 1:  $64,917.00 yr. / $31.21 hr.
  • Step 2:  $67,189.00 yr. / $32.30 hr.
  • Step 3:  $69,540.00 yr. / $33.43 hr.
  • Step 4:  $71,974.00 yr. / $34.60 hr.
  • Step 5:  $74,494.00 yr. / $35.81 hr.
  • Step 6:  $77,101.00 yr. / $37.07 hr.
  • Step 7:  $79,799.00 yr. / $38.37 hr.

Applications can be printed from this page or a packet may be obtained from Kelly Battisti, Career Service Specialist for the Rock Springs Police Department.  Lateral transfers for current law enforcement officers are accepted with 3 years of experience and current advanced post-certification.  Lateral transfer applicants must still pass testing requirements as outlined below; however they are not required to take the written P.O.S.T. test.  Candidates must pass the written P.O.S.T. test, physical fitness performance test, and oral board interview, EyeDetect integrity test and intensive background investigation.

       Physical fitness test at the Family Rec Center, 3900 Sweetwater Drive. Pass/Fail. Comfortable clothing such as shorts, sweats, t-shirt, tennis shoes or sport shoes are recommended for the physical test. 

        Written test at a location to be determined.  Pass/Fail. 

        Oral board interviews at Rock Springs City Hall, 212 D Street.  Come dressed for a professional interview. Pass/Fail.

About the position:

The Rock Springs Police Department is a progressive department consisting of 46 sworn officers.  Police officers perform a variety of duties including protecting the people of Rock Springs, enforcement of laws and prevention of crime.  Some of their duties include general investigations of crimes and accidents, control traffic flow and enforce State and local traffic regulations.  Officers start out in Patrol and can work towards special assignments as Detective, Field Training Officer, Tactical Response Team Member, K-9 Officer or School Resource Officer.

  • To qualify for employment, candidates must have reached their 21st birthday by the date of hire.
  • Successful applicants will attend the Wyoming Law Enforcement Academy.  The cost of the academy and attendee's wages will be covered by the City of Rock Springs.

We suggest that each applicant be aware of their own physical abilities, and practice each of the required categories in advance of attempting the department physical testing.  Keep in mind that Rock Springs is 6388 feet above sea level (More than a thousand feet higher than the Mile High City of Denver, Colorado).
