Police Officer Testing

The RSPD is a progressive department consisting of 46 sworn officers.  Police officers perform a variety of duties involved in the enforcement of laws and the prevention of crimes; conduct and participate in general investigations of crimes, accidents, and cases; control traffic flow and enforce State and local traffic regulations.  Officers start out in Patrol and can work towards special assignments as Detectives, Field Training Officers, Tactical Team Member, K-9 Officers, Traffic Officers, or School Resource Officers.

Candidates must pass a physical fitness test, by meeting one of the following requirements: 1) must meet the 40th percentile in each category assessed, 2) accumulate a 50th percentile average of all categories assessed, with a minimum level of 25th percentile in each category, written P.O.S.T. exam, consisting of four (4) sections that measure the applicant's basic math and problem solving, reading comprehension, grammar and writing.  Must meet a minimum score of 70% in each section with an overall average of 75% to pass.  Oral board interview, polygraph and intensive background investigation also required. Certified Peace Officers in the State of Wyoming are not required to take the written exam and could be considered lateral transfers.  Applications can be picked up at City Hall or downloaded online at the City’s website www.rswy.net.

  • Entry level wage is $25.81 - $26.46 per hour.

  • To qualify for employment, candidates must have reached their 21st birthday by the date of hire.  

August Testing Dates and Requirements

July 23, 2019 – Application due at City Hall Clerk’s Office by 4:00 p.m.

August 5, 2019 – Physical fitness test at 8:30 a.m. at the Family Rec Center, 3900 Sweetwater Drive.  Pass/Fail. Comfortable clothing such as shorts, sweats, t-shirt, tennis shoes or sport shoes are recommended for the physical test. 

August 5, 2019 – Written test at 1:00 p.m. at Rock Springs Fire Station #3, 145 Industrial Drive.  Pass/Fail. 

August 6, 2019 – Oral board interviews at Rock Springs City Hall, 212 D Street.  Come dressed for a professional interview.  Pass/Fail.    

August 6-7, 2019 – Polygraph - eat something prior to the polygraph and limit your caffeine intake.  Cell phones are not allowed during the polygraph, so please leave them in your car.  Comfortable clothing is suggested.
