Media Release

Date:  March 13, 2012

Subject:  Motorcycle Safety

With moderate temperatures and sunny conditions expected for the March 16, 2012 weekend the Rock Springs Police Department anticipates a large number of motorcyclists to get their machines out of storage and onto the streets and highways.

The Rock Springs Police Department urges all motorists to increase awareness of motorcyclists this weekend, and for motorcyclists to remember most motorists have not seen motorcycles on the streets for several months now.

Motorcyclists are encouraged to ensure their machines are in good working order prior to putting their machines into service, and to be aware that most motorists are not used to seeing motorcycles on the street.  Motorists are reminded to allow for increased following distances behind motorcycles.  The smaller size of the motorcycle gives a motorist the false impression they are following at distances greater than they are actually following.

The first riding weekend of Spring all too often brings with it motorcycle versus motor vehicle crashes with injuries.  The Rock Springs Police Department encourages all motorcyclists to wear DOT approved headgear, and for all motorists to be aware of the increased motoring risks this weekend.

The Rock Springs Police Department also reminds all motorists to expect an increase in pedestrian and bicyclist traffic with the warmer weather and to pay special attention for these hazards especially at intersections and other crosswalks.
