K9 Traffic Enforcement

May 20th, 2013

In the evening hours of Tuesday, March 19th, officers of the Rock Springs Police Department K9 Unit, Traffic Enforcement Team and Street Crimes Unit conducted joint operations with a focus on drug enforcement.  Based on traffic stops conducted from observed driving violations, the coordinated operation then moved to "free air sniffs" conducted by the K9's.  Drivers and occupants were also checked for outstanding warrants and valid driver's licenses.  The result of the detail was eighteen traffic stops, eleven citations, thirteen warnings, eight K9 deployments and one arrest on an Albany County warrant.

RSPD conducted another session of the special detail on May 17th.  The result of the detail was sixteen traffic stops, seven K9 deployments, three arrests, eight warnings and seven citations.  The team reported immediate success, getting the first alleged dangerous drunk driver off the streets within six minutes of leaving RSPD to start the detail.

The RSPD K9 Unit consists of Handler Darren Johnson and his partner, "Sig", Amanda Clawson and her partner, "Akina", Mat Register and his partner, "Gunner", and Sergeant Jubal Larimore.

Members of the Traffic Enforcement Team include Officers Amanda Clawson and Michael Hanson.  The Street Crimes Unit focus is on drug enforcement.  The effort was enhanced by the Sweetwater County Central Communications which provided a dedicated communications officer and channel to the event.  It was also supported by on-duty RSPD officers.

There are several reasons for the detail including arresting wanted persons, drunk drivers, and those involved with illegal drugs in our community.
