Parks & Recreation
MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR OF PARKS AND RECREATION:
Welcome to 2015!
On behalf of the City of Rock Springs and all staff members within the Parks and Recreation Department, I invite you to explore the numerous recreational facilities and offerings we provide to infuse fun and good health into your life. Our mission is to "Enhance the Quality of Life in Rock Springs," and we continue to focus on this mission each and every day.
At the Civic Center, things are always moving at a fast pace. A busy year has begun with the second annual Ironman Fitness Challenge! With their enthusiasm and exciting ideas, JJ Syvrud and his staff have created this event and a number of new programs to energize their regular patrons and attract new members to the facility. The recently purchased Wibit has provided lots of pleasure and laughs for all ages - so come out and play with us! There are also a couple of new and different pieces of equipment in this building including a dedicated self-contained stretching unit to increase flexibility! We are in the process of replacing the antiquated hot tub adjacent to the pool which will definitely be a hit with patrons using this amenity! So stop by soon - the Civic Center staff is anxious to make your visit an enjoyable one.
The Family Recreation Center remains full of fun & fitness opportunities for the entire family. Located on the west side of Rock Springs, Mike Evans and his staff work hard to keep this monumental indoor facility safe and clean for all ages to enjoy. The leisure pool continues to be a favorite play-place for the youth of our community - as it has numerous fun water activities for all. The FRC cardio-equipment is always clean and ready for your arrival. The FRC now offers thirteen different organized fitness classes for those who enjoy group exercise. Ken Reed and his staff continue to offer great ice skating opportunities in the ice arena. With the indoor walking track, ice skating rink, large gymnasium, racquetball courts, two large swimming pools, multiple cardio & weight rooms and relaxing Jacuzzis, opportunities really do abound at this large recreation facility!
When outdoor activities such as golf, softball, and baseball interest you, come visit the Paul J. Wataha Recreation Complex. This outdoor recreation area offers golf and much more and provides some of the finest sport facilities found in the region. The White Mountain Golf Course is now a 27-hole facility and continues to provide golfing opportunities and challenges to beginners and seasoned players alike. The full-service clubhouse, newly renovated pro shop and convenient snack shop are available to all. If it's practice you need, the driving range & "short-game practice facility" adjacent to the clubhouse will definitely help you to hone your game! The Wataha Ball Complex is always well groomed and ready for local teams to "play ball". Several open space areas at this outdoor recreation area provide enough room for flying kites, throwing a Frisbee, sunbathing or just relaxing in the great outdoors. Over the winter and spring months, Grant Yaklich and his crew spent many hours working on equipment maintenance and getting each golf hole ready for play.
The golf course and pro shop are now open for business - come check us out! Aaron Allred, PGA Golf Professional, and his staff have been busy restocking the pro sop with exciting new merchandise from UnderArmour , Nike and Adidas, to name a few.
If you are just looking for fresh air and relaxation closer to town, please visit one of over twenty three different neighborhood and community parks we manage. Mark Lyon and our Parks Department staff provide residents with well-maintained parks located in all areas of the City. Most offer playgrounds, picnic sites and plenty of open grass areas. Bitter Creek Bark Park, Rock Springs' first off-leash park, has been open for over six years now and remains one of the busiest city parks in town. Your beloved dogs have their own personal park and many love to play there every day! Our "Bark Park" is located on West Center Street (behind the Plaza Mall), and is a very convenient, safe and friendly pet area. In 2014, the parks operation joined efforts with the Wataha Recreation Area staff to create southwest Wyoming's first Arboretum, which is located at the Wataha Recreation Area. The High Desert Arboretum harbors over 120 newly planted trees that can be viewed by residents who are considering planting similar trees of their own.
So, whatever your desire is when it comes to recreation, the City of Rock Springs Parks and Recreation Department is here to serve you. While on this website, please take a minute to review all four divisions of our department, as they have posted their information here. We are also on Facebook and would love to have you 'friend' us there as well!
Please send me your suggestions and ideas at any time. I will personally see to it that every effort is made to make your recreational experience in Rock Springs enjoyable, safe and healthy!!
Come out and play!
