Parks & Recreation

A MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR...

Welcome to 2024 in RS Parks & Rec! This year, the Rock Springs Parks & Recreation Department is undergoing a Needs Assessment study by BerryDunn, a consulting firm who specializes in park & recreation operations, as for more than a decade, our department has not had enough funding to address many replacement items or major repairs. Our hope is that you will participate in the process and provide your feedback through the BerryDunn social pinpoint website, or one of the many pop-up events that BerryDunn will be doing early this summer. The assessment will be complete in the early fall, with a full report to the city council. The overall goal of the consultants' work is to provide options to the city in order to "right-size" the department with respect to the funding the city is able to provide for the quality of life in Rock Springs.

Meanwhile, we are not sitting still and our department has completed the replacement of the Wataha Ball Complex softball field lighting this spring, and this will be a noticeable change when the LED lighting is on for evening games! We are currently overseeing the replacement of the original chiller system for the ice arena floor at the Family Rec Center; this will stabilize the rink operations for decades to come. Lastly, the irrigation system replacement at the Wataha Rec Area has finally begun! This project has been needed for a decade now, and with Specific Purpose Tax (SPT) funding that passed in 2022, we are revitalizing the system that waters all of Wataha Rec Area for decades to come! All three of these exciting SPT projects will improve your recreational opportunities in Rock Springs. Other exciting improvements in 2024 include a new playground at Palisades Park, a new fishing dock at the Wataha fishing pond, new safety netting above the Wataha Bleacher Complex and new lockers (this summer) in both Family Rec Center locker rooms! New water features are also ready for installation at Garnet Spray Park, just in time for summer splashing.
Please take the time to review all of the exciting events we have planned within this guide for the community this summer, and take advantage of all the quality of life opportunities RS Parks & Recreation provides for you! And remember to click here (or to the right) to check out our video, which showcases what our department has to offer. All the best!
