Cold Case Investigations

"Cold Case" is a term used to describe a case which remains unresolved. This typically occurs when all viable leads have been exhausted and no suspects have been identified or a suspect is identified but a lack of evidence prohibits arrest or prosecution.

As time passes, other crimes occur that require the immediate attention of investigators. Investigators who are originally assigned a case may move on to another assignment, be promoted, or retire. Sometimes the crime's jurisdiction may be a factor in a case "going cold".

Several things may lead to a "Cold Case" being re-opened. With the recent advances in DNA analysis and evidence processing, many cases are solved as a result of old evidence being re-examined with new techniques. Another common factor is a "change of heart" by witnesses or even suspects, who decide to come forth with new information pertaining to old cases.

Many "Cold Cases" are reviewed by several investigators and varying experiences and insights can reveal evidence or statements that were overlooked during the initial investigation.
